HEADLINE NEWS
Our dear friend Akiko Kawasaki, members of the Okuda family and colleagues
in the Japanese chapter of WEF,
As the Chairperson of WEFSA (WEF South Africa) I wish to pass on my
condolences to the family of Prof Shinjo Okuda.
As a pillar of wisdom and as a person who carried the lamp to light the way
and the staff to guide, Professor Shinjo Okuda showed the world that education
is of value and that long treasured values in all cultures share the same
goal.
Many cultures respected the wise words of our dear friend. May those that
remain carry his wisdom with grace and treasure the path we all share in
developing people through learning. May the thoughts and prayers be received by the family in celebration of
the life of a truly respected man.
We all carry his ideas and guidance in our hearts and minds and with the
memory of such a leader can only contribute to his legacy in many small
ways.
Our thoughts and prayers are for those that grieve on his passing.
May his light always shine in the memory of others.
For and on behalf of the members of WEFSA and WEFSAYF

Thank you very much for your email. I am sorry for not writing to you sooner. A memorial service was held and we laid Shinjo’s ashes in the tomb last week. He was also honored to be given a court rank called JUSHII from the emperor. He is now with his wife peacefully at a temple near Somei cemetery, Tokyo, where cherry blossoms are beautiful. Shinjo Okuda died calmly and peacefully: he passed away 2:30 am on
March 2nd. That night, we were with him telling him that we are and will always
be with him.
After a long hospital stay since December 24th, he had repeated
bouts of diarrhea caused by some virus or something and high fever. He had
critical moments four times or so during his hospitalization, but each time, he
overcame and got better amazingly with his strong will and health power.
Doctors were amazed by his strength, but he kept loosing his weight. The final
bout of high fever was strong enough to make him sleep eternally.
We had a wake and a memorial service and funeral at Gokokuji temple in Tokyo on the 7th and 8th, and more than 450 people attended. People sent us flowers and they decorated the altar as you see in the attached picture. The names of the people who sent flowers were listed at the entrance of the funeral site and WEF Japan section's name was among them, too. At the beginning of the wake, the master of the ceremony read a description of my father's life, and she mentioned WEF and told people that he was looking forward to the WEF conference in 2011 in Japan. My father had a wonderful life, with huge opportunities and
challenges to establish the content of Education in Japan after the 2nd World
War. He had many friends and colleagues, and a small but happy family including
his two great-grand daughters, a two-year old and a six-month old.
The only
regret he had was that he could not attend the International WEF conference in
2011.
Thank you very much for your friendship and hospitality you’ve always shown to him. I hope to see you next year at the International WEF in Tokyo. Thank you again.
